Esky Train No. 9
This Esky Train was Blown by a Supercharger
and will be back for 2004 naturally aspirated.

It started life as a simple rigid water pipe frame driven by a Suzuki 850cc 3 cylinder mighty boy
engine and gearbox. Front end was and still is Holden VN stub axles and breaks with a cut and
shortened mighty boy steering rack, pedals all hand made to suit. The body is made of ply wood
which fits over the engine and houses the esky that you sit on as the two front seats. The esky
can hold 3 slabs of VB and ice. This is how the buggy was at bathurst 2000 the big wet.
In 2001 we wanted to go V8! so I set about grafting a VW box to an old Holden 253. all this
had to fit under the same body which meant major changes to the frame and fitting a second
mighty boy radiator one on each side. It all worked out in the end and there is nothing like the
sound of a V8 on the mountain with duel straight through pipes.
So 2002 in keeping with the theme of constant upgrades, I got my hands on and old 4/71 GMC
blower off a truck, cleaned it up and fitted it to a hand made manifold, made up my own gilmer
belt drive, now we had something that not only sounded good but was starting to look like it was
out of a Mad Max movie.
Sadly in 2003 it all went wrong, after changing the old Holden 253 for a reconditioned 308, we
took the buggy out for a test run months before race weekend, anyway I had a crash and rolled
the buggy over which broke my leg and did a fair bit of damage all round. so we didn't end up
going to Bathurst in 2003. I have since striped the Blown 308 out of the buggy and given all the
rest to a mate who is hoping to have it repaired and back together with his motor for Bathurst
2004. |

When Gruby rolled it he did a fair bit of damage, Bent the rear axles trashed the body (as it is
only made from ply I had to rebuild) and most of the frame work was twisted in some form. He gave
it to us in parts and we rebuild and put it back together with a lot of head scratching and phone
calls. It now has a new 253 with a 350 holly (secondary’s blocked) a VW trans axle (mounted upside
down) that you can only get 1st, 2nd and reverse as you don’t need to go that fast cause it would
be a bit of a hand full. Things I added were a deck lid to cover the fuel tank (so we can sit 6
people on it) with a V8 style wing, head lights and gauges (for temp, oil pres & tacho) new ignition
system as the old one was only 8 volt and a few other small things that are mainly out of site. We
are now thinking about the super charger and also planning front guards and a few other things so
that when we go back to the nats it will be different so we can win again.
