| At the top of The Cutting
is the stretch of track running alongside a park named after the engineer
who helped build The Great Race road. Timing is crucial here with some
drivers preferring to stay in third gear for the run along the fence at
Reid Park through Sulman Park to McPhillamy Park and others preferring
to go up to fourth gear to sweep through the left-hand bend at Sulman Park.
It was coming over the top of Reid
Park in 1980 that that year's eventual winner, Peter Brock, struck trouble
which almost cost him the race. Brock was in third place in his Commodore
when he had a misunderstanding with a Gemini. The Gemini went into a multiple
roll and Brock's front spoiler had to be removed. Just seconds after leader
Dick Johnson headed past Brock, to put Brock a lap down, Johnson hit The
Rock and Brock went on to win by more than the one lap. |
