| Between Hell Corner
and Griffin's Bend lies the uphill run, Mountain Straight, which marks
the ascent to the top of Mount Panorama. Good speed out of Hell Corner
is critical here as drivers can achieve velocities of over 240 km/h before
braking into Griffin's Bend. But the upward slope in Mountain Straight
makes poor speed out of Hell Corner difficult to make up for.
Like most sections of The Great
Race track, Mountain Straight has witnessed its share of memorable Bathurst
campaign disasters.
In 1975, Jack Brabham and Sterling
Moss were touted the ultimate 'dream team', but suffered huge disappointment
when they stalled badly at the start line. After three hours of repairs
they eventually started the race only to see their Bathurst conquest end
prematurely for a second time as their car became engulfed in smoke on
the this very ascent up Mt Panorama. |
