| This right-hand turn
was originally named after the Mayor of Bathurst whose 1930s vision for
a scenic road on the edge of town also extended to a motor-racing track.
Today Griffin's Bend marks the end of the last overtaking straight before
the ascent of the mountain begins in earnest. Griffin's Bend requires a
fine balance of precise braking, made easier by gravity, and maintaining
plenty of speed ready for the steep climb up through The Cutting. Drivers
will often take this corner in third gear as losing speed here can mean
the end of a good lap time.
In 1981, a combination of tyre problems
and Griffin's Bend saw Kevin Bartlett tumble out of the Great Race. |
