| Before going into the longest straight
in Australia, Conrod Straight, drivers' speeds can drop back to as slow
as 85km/h at this bend, named after a notorious accident which saw famous
motorcyclist, Jack Forrest, fall from his bike and break his elbow. A treacherous
turn, not braking early enough before Forrest's Elbow can see drivers quickly
ending their race in a tangle of metal and ready-mix.
In 1971, Leo Geoghegan and Doug
Whitehead discovered the danger of the curve in a spectacular clash which
saw the Mazda end up on its roof with glass scattered all over the track.
In 1992, the year Jim Richards and
Mark Skaife claimed their second successive Bathurst crown in their Nissan,
it was at the end of The Elbow, at the entrance to Conrod Straight, that
the controversial pile-up occurred. Richards knocked his front wheel askew
at The Cutting, skating off at The Elbow, clobbering several other cars
and severely damaging the Nissan. But the race was already over and he
had won. Nasty scenes followed at the presentation as the pro-Johnson crowd
booed Richards and Skaife, causing Richards to respond with the now famous
line, 'You're all a pack of bastards'. |
